World Food Day: The Success Story Of A Physically Challenged Farmer

Ghana today joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Food Day, a day set aside every year to eradicate global hunger.

The increase in hunger is largely due to the proliferation of violent conflicts and climate-related shocks which are also major drivers of distress migration.

In Ghana, the zeal and quest of a physically challenged farmer to eradicate famine by venturing into farming has inspired many Ghanaians.

Kofi Vinyo, a 37-year old physically challenged farmer owns several hectars of farms in Kwatre a farming community near Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region.

Vinyo, the 2016 National best Maize farmer has 55 hectares of Chilli Pepper, 25 hectares of ginger, 330 hectares of maize farm in Kwatre.

He has also been able to build a greenhouse facility for the cultivation of tomatoes and vegetables, a snail production facility and an improvised solar dryer for the processing and drying of pepper in Abesim.

According to him, his facilities employ more than 20 workers and he plans to increase the number of workers in the near future to boost production.

Speaking to, he revealed that the produce from his farms are for export and local consumption and called on government to support local farmers to reflect the “Invest in food security and rural development” theme of the 2017 World Food Day.
