The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has predicted defeat for John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 general elections.

The global think-thank in its latest report on Ghana said it “expects Mr Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to secure re-election in 2020,” having presided over a positive economic outlook during their first term in office.

“Nana Akufo-Addo, the president, and his NPP will see the country’s economic situation generally improve during the remainder of their terms of office… Akufo-Addo will face a challenge from John Mahama — Ghana’s president from 2012 to early 2017, who was elected leader of the opposition NDC in February 2019,” the report said.

According to the EIU, what would compound the NDC’s problem, is the difficult economic situation suffered under former president Mahama’s which is fresh in the minds of Ghanaians.

“The 2016 legislative election was won by the NPP; and the campaign was dominated by the faltering economy, which many Ghanaians still associate with Mr Mahama.”

The report concluded that, “The Economist Intelligence Unit believes that it will be difficult for the NDC under Mr Mahama to portray itself as the better custodian of Ghana’s economy, especially as the country’s growth outlook is fairly strong.”

Before the 2016 elections, the London-based think-thank in two different reports, predicted victory for the then opposition candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP citing “popular frustration with Ghana’s poor economic performance under the NDC administration.”

Nana Akufo-Addo beat then president John Mahama in the 2016 elections with a margin of over one million votes — the worst defeat for a sitting president in the history of Ghana. He polled 5,716,026 million votes, representing 53.85%, while John Mahama polled 4,713,277 million votes representing 44.40%.
