, 7 Key Facts About The Late Robert MugabeFormer Zimbabwe President, Robert Mugabe has died at the age of 95, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced.

The announcement of the passing of the veteran and controversial African leader was made on Friday morning.

Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe from 1980 until he was forced to step down by the military in November 2017 following nationwide mass protests.

  1. Full Name

His full name was Robert Gabriel Mugabe

2. Birth Place and Date of Birth

He was born on February 21, 1924, at Kutama Mission northwest of Harare to a poor Shona family.

3. Parents

His father Gabriel Matibiri, was a carpenter while his mother Bona taught Christian catechism to the village children.

4. Marriage Life

Sarah Francesca “Sally” Mugabe was the first wife of Robert Mugabe. Popularly known as Amai(Mother) Sally died in 1992. He later married Grace Marufu in August 1996.

4. Professional Career

He qualified at a school teacher at age 17. In 1958, Mugabe moved to Ghana to work at St Mary’s Teacher Training College in Takoradi. He taught at Apowa Secondary School, also at Takoradi, after obtaining his local certification at Achimota College (1958–1960).

5. Prison Life

He spent 10 years in prison camps or jail  for his nationalist activities in 1964.

6. Education in Prison

During his incarceration, he gained three degrees through correspondence.

7. Religion

He was Christian by faith and fellowshipped with the Catholic Church.
