Dr Olivia Agbenyeke, the Medical Doctor From the Slums in Agbogbloshie.
Realising a dream does not come on a silver platter as it sometimes takes some dint of hard work to make the dream come true.
In some cases, the realisation of the dream may be beyond you and attaining it dwells on the shoulders of certain individuals.
That is how the powerful and awesome story of Olivia Agbenyeke, now a Medical Doctor begun.
Olivia Agbenyeke completed Keta Senior High Technical School(Ketasco) with an amazing seven As and one B2 in Science with a great desire to become a Medical Doctor.
But the dream was on the verge of remaining a dream and a sad bedtime story to be told in future as she got stuck in one of Ghana’s worst slums, Agbogbloshie.
The young and beautiful Olivia despite passing in style was serving as a bartender in her father’s drinking spot because of financial difficulties.
Her poor parents could not support the dream of their brilliant and beautiful daughter when it mattered most.
Grieving and boiling with pain, young Olivia did not know that life could sometimes smile on you at the last minute.
A teacher in Ketasco, Mr Foga Nukunu, touched by Olivia’s academic brilliance, humility, discipline and respectfulness took the significant and life-changing initiative for her.
Mr Nukunu sought the help of a top journalist with state-owned Daily Graphic Newspaper, Kofi Ambidextrous to write and publish Olivia’s story.
The publication was to garner support from the public and corporate institutions for the realisation of Olivia’s dream.
The move paid off as Phoenix Life Assurance Company Limited stepped in and in a big way, to support Olivia to the University of Ghana Medical School.
Six years on, the story is different, the dream that was dreamt was actualised on November 15, 2019, as Olivia graduated from the University of Ghana as a Medical Doctor.
Congratulations! Dr Olivia Agbenyeke.
There are jokes but dreams are not jokes as they can be actualised. Don’t give up, continue to live the dream.
