Black Stars legend, Opoku Afriyie has died

Ghana and Asante Kotoko legend Opoku Afriyie is reported dead.

The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained but GhanaXtra understands that the former Black Stars forward died on Sunday, March 29 in Kumasi.

Popularly called ‘Bayie’, Afriyie played for both of Ghana’s two top clubs, Kotoko and Hearts of Oak during his peak.

He was the top goal scorer of the local league in 1979 and 1981.

Afriyie was a member of the Ghana team that won the 1978 African Cup of Nations for keeps, scoring the only two goals in the finals.

He was one of twenty Ghanaians among 200 footballers nominated by CAF in the list of Best African Footballers of the last 50 years.

Opoku Afriyie passed on to eternity at the age of 75.
