The Electoral Commission has postponed the compilation of the new voters register due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The indefinite suspension of the exercise follows the EC’s meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Wednesday.

The compilation of the new voters’ roll was to begin on April 18 and run up to the end of May.

But according to the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the exercise can only begin when the COVID-19 crisis is under control.

“We had planned to do the registration on the [18th of April] but because of the pandemic, we can’t do it on the 18th so we are observing what is happening around Ghana and the global issue,”

“When it gets to a time when they think the situation is fertile to go ahead with the registration then they tell us…”

Dr Quaicoe said the EC is still looking to commence the exercise by the end of April but that will be dependent on the advice from the health authorities managing the pandemic.
