GhanaXtra.com can confirm that plans are far advanced for a possible lockdown of some major cities in the country over the outbreak of COVID-19.
The major cities which will be part of the first batch of the lockdown are Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa.
Details of an Operation Order of the Ghana Police Service sighted by this portal reveal the measures put in place to ensure compliance, threat analysis and tasks.
It also outlines the operational routes the police in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, Bureau of National Investigations and the Ghana Immigration Service will be monitoring in the process.
A portion of the order reads ” It will be recalled that following the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Ghana, the Ghana Police Service(GPS) has taken various initiatives aimed at enforcing directives from relevant authorities in the county, Operation Order Number XXXXXX and Signal Number XXXXXX dated 24 March 2020 refers”.
The order continues that “As a follow up to the measures already in place to combat the pandemic, it is anticipated that a partial to a full lockdown of some parts of the country ill be executed in a bid to contain the spread of the Coronavirus. It is further anticipated that four(4) cities namely; Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa will be amongst the first batch of cities to be a locked down”.
The date of the lockdown, however, remains unclear but a source at the top echelon of the police service tells this portal that plans have been finalised for the possible lockdown, which would be announced on Friday.
