Old Vandals Disown Bernard Oduro Takyi Over Disqualification By NPP

The National Executive of the Old Vandals Association(OVA) of the Commonwealth Hall has responded to media reports that the association is angry over the disqualification of one of its members from the NPP’s parliamentary race.

According to the association, the said reports attributed to the association is unfortunate as neither national nor its Bono regional branch has issued any such purported statement to threaten the NPP.

A statement from the association says it has not issued any threat to the New Patriotic Party(NPP) over the disqualification of Bernard Oduro Takyi, a parliamentary aspirant in the Sunyani West Constituency.

The statement reveals that it is unfortunate for any individual or group of individuals to link the group to any political party as OVA is a non-partisan association and does not meddle in partisan politics.

A portion of the statement sighted by this portal reads: “The attention of the Old Vandals Association, Brong Ahafo (OVA- B/A) has been drawn to a publication by an online portal, citinewsroom.com and other portals which have been widely circulated on social media on the above subject matter”.

The statement continues that “Our checks reveal that there are no signatories to the purported statement neither has the OVA – National nor OVA – B/A issued such a statement. Therefore, ascribing the statement as having come from the Association is rather unfortunate. OVA B/A wish to state unequivocally that it is a non-political association and is not affiliated to any political party”.

Media reports earlier this week suggested that the association has asked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Parliamentary Appeal Committee to reinstate Bernard Oduro Takyi.

A purported statement from the group asked the Committee to reconsider what it described as “the poor, barbaric and cruel decision of the Vetting Committee of the Bono Region” to disqualify Mr Takyi, an Old Vandal, from the contest “without any reason.”

The group insisted that it will sever all ties with the party should it fail to reverse the decision.

The attention of the Old Vandals Association, Brong Ahafo (OVA- B/A) has been drawn to a
publication by an online portal, citinewsroom.com and other portals which have been widely circulated on social media on the above subject matter.

The story indicates “the Old Vandals Association of the Commonwealth Hall from the University of Ghana has asked the New Patriotic Party (NPP)'s National Parliamentary Appeal Committee to reinstate Bernard Oduro Takyi as a parliamentary aspirant in the Sunyani West Constituency of the Bono Region”. The news portal quoted copiously from a statement purported to have been issued by the Association.

Our checks reveal that there are no signatories to the purported statement neither has the OVA – National nor OVA – B/A issued such a statement. Therefore, ascribing the statement as having come from the Association is rather unfortunate. OVA B/A wish to state unequivocally that it is a non-political association and is not affiliated to any political party.

As an association, we seek the welfare of our members and thus encourage them to undertake endeavours in all spheres of life. Mr Benard Oduro Takyi is an astute member of
the Association who has courted the admiration of all.

It goes without saying that as a Vandal, the Association supports him and all other Vandals seeking political office. However, our point of departure is involving the Association into direct partisan politics especially something which has to do with an internal political party matter.

In this regard, we demand an immediate retraction of the story and the rendering of an unqualified apology to the Association. We also demand that the news portals publish the names of the signatories to the purported statement in order for the membership of the said people to be verified. We hope to count on your fullest cooperation in this regard.

Thank you.
