President Akufo-Addo has upon the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council and consultation with the Council of State, granted amnesty to 808 prisoners.
The move is also in accordance with Article72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
A statement issued Thursday, March 26, 2020, by the Director-General of Prisons, Patrick Darko Missah confirmed the release.
According to the statement, the first offenders totalling 783 who have served half of their sentences, 11 seriously ill prisoners and three aged prisoners are to be released outright.
The statement further revealed that seven prisoners on death row would have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
Four prisoners serving life sentences will also have their sentences commuted to 20 years definite term.
