Ghana extends border closure by four more weeks

Ghana’s borders would remain closed for four more weeks as the country continues to implement measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was announced by president Akufo-Addo during his 7th televised address on the country’s COVID-19 situation and response on Sunday April 19, 2020.

“As has been established, the overwhelming majority of confirmed cases have come from travellers or from people who have come into contact with travellers. It is, therefore, incumbent on us to continue to be vigilant about travellers into our country until further notice,” the President said.

Ghana closed its airports and borders to human traffic on March 21 following the confirmation of 19 coronavirus cases and the death of one patient.

Announcing a similar extension last week, the president noted that, the decision to quickly impose border restrictions, though may sound harsh, has proven to be effective in containing the virus.

“It appears that our common efforts have been modestly successful in containing the virus and minimizing its spread.”

“Undoubtedly, the decision taken from day one to act quickly and decisively, and impose what may have seemed like harsh restrictions, have now proven to be effective, and have saved a lot of lives,” he told the nation.

President Akufo-Addo in his address on Sunday night said, he has “signed an Executive Instrument, to extend the closure of our borders for two more weeks, beginning Monday, 20th April.”

He also indicated that all educational institutions will remain closed with the ban on social and religious gatherings still in force.

The president, however, lifted the partial lockdown on Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi and their contiguous districts.
