Joe Dakota, Hearts & Black Stars legend killed by Coronavirus

Former Accra Hearts of Oak defender, Jonathan Oti Ankrah popularly called Joe Dakota, has died, the team has confirmed.

Joe Dakota died of the sweeping coronavirus which got him admitted to the intensive care unit for a number of weeks in the United States.

Joe Dakota was active for both club and country between the late ’60s and early ’70s.

A statement from the club said, ” Everyone at Hearts of Oak is saddened to hear of the passing of our former player Jonathan Oti Ankrah (Joe Dakota). He was a pillar in defence at the club during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this grievous moment.”

The 84-year-old is the third Ghanaian football legend to pass on in less than two weeks following the death of Kotoko’s Opoku Afriyie and Kwasi Owusu of Tano Bofoakwa fame.
