Self-proclaimed Angel of God, Bishop Daniel Obinim was arrested yesterday for violating the President’s directive on social gatherings.
The controversial prophet reportedly feigned sickness when personnel of the Ghana Police Service stormed his church to pick him up for holding counselling sessions in clear disregard of the ban on religious activities.
He was eventually escorted to a health facility in East Legon, where he was admitted under police protection as they await his recovery and subsequent arrest.
This is not the first time the founder of the International Godsway Church, has been arrested.
GhanaXtra.com has compiled the number of times Bishop Obinim has come under police arrest.
1Hot FM Arrest : 2011
Bishop Obinim was arrested and placed in police custody on August 8, 2011 for allegedly damaging property and attacking panelists at Accra-based Hot FM.
He was reported to have gone to the studio with two of his junior pastors to protest a discussion of his extra-marital affair.
The man of God later admitted to “causing serious bodily harm” to persons at the station. He appeared remorseful and was granted bail.
Bishop Obinim was finally freed in October, 2015 after prosecutors failed to prove their case against him after calling three witnesses to make their case.
According to the court, evidence of the three prosecution witnesses were discredited and so the court could not reasonably convict Bishop Obinim, and hence acquitted him.
2GHc 11.6 Million Ritual Fraud: 2016
Bishop Daniel Obinim was held by the police in Tema after he handed himself in following an invitation from the police over the widely publicized flogging of a church member.
Police later confirmed Obinim was arrested in connection with a fraud case.
He was said to have taken gold and monies totaling GHc 11.6 million (an equivalent of $2.9m) from a complainant with the promise to spiritually bless and increase the wealth.
But Obinim had failed to deliver on his promise or to give back the gold and money.
The pastor was subsequently transferred to the Police headquarters in Accra for further questioning after his church members massed up at the Tema police station.
3Violated Ban on Religious Activities: 2020
The Ghanaian cleric was arrested on May 14, 2020 following an exposè on his dubious deals by member of parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.
It was later discovered that Bishop Obinim’s arrest had nothing to do with the allegations made against him by the law maker. He was actually picked up for violating the presidential ban on social gatherings and religious activities.
