The Winneba Magistrate Court has given judgment against the NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Effutu Constituency, James Kofi Annan.
The judgment was delivered on Friday, 28th August 2020, following a defamation suit filed by the plaintiff, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.
In its ruling, the court upheld that a press conference held by James Kofi Annan was defamatory and awarded cost against the defendant.
The court consequently slapped GHC20,000 as damages and an additional GHC5000 as legal cost against James Kofi Annan.
James Kofi Annan has also been ordered to retract and apologise the said defamatory statements on the same platforms he caused them to be published not later than Monday, 31st August 2020.
The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin filed a defamation suit after James Kofi Annan in a press conference alleged that Afenyo-Markin had plotted an allegation of financial impropriety against him.
He accused the Effutu MP of being behind a grand scheme to tarnish his image in order to jeopardize his chances of winning the Effutu seat in the December polls.
